Local knowledge
Tasting in St. Helena
We route around the Main Street bottleneck. On a Saturday afternoon, Highway 29 through St. Helena can back up 20 minutes. We know the timing and we'll use the Silverado Trail or plan your afternoon tasting on the east side so you never sit in traffic.
Spring Mountain District to the west, Howell Mountain to the east. Spring Mountain District rises to the west of town and produces powerful, structured reds from volcanic soil at elevation. Howell Mountain sits to the east and is known for intense, age-worthy Cabernet. Both are mountain AVAs with a different style from the valley floor — bolder, more tannic, and worth the drive up.
The roads that matter. Main Street doubles as Highway 29 and gets genuinely congested on weekend afternoons, which is a real routing consideration. The Silverado Trail runs parallel to the east and is often the faster north-south route. Spring Mountain Road climbs west; Howell Mountain Road climbs east.
Landmarks. Main Street shopping and restaurants, Beringer's historic Rhine House, the Charles Krug tasting room.
St. Helena is a charming town 30 minutes north of Napa with a walkable Main Street, historic wineries and excellent lunch spots. It's the mid-valley hub where many groups stop to eat between morning and afternoon tastings.
Local tip from your driver
Main Street has great lunch spots — Gottfried's, Farmstead, The Lyfe — but they fill up fast on weekends. We'll make a reservation or time your arrival for the gap between lunch rush and dinner. If you want boutique shopping, we'll build in 30 minutes between tastings.
